One thing I really didn't feel was of quality and certainty wasn't designed very well was the handrail. The PVC piping used, though the lower end option, is too soft to pull any fastener type tight...it deforms, and easily scratches, gouges, and kinks. Worse than that is the... use of toggle bolts at all much less the very light-duty type you include. That connection as a whole is terrible for a number of reasons, but even worse is that the balusters are pre-bent at their tops for the pitch of the stairway way too far in the wrong direction so its impossible to get the rail pulled tight to the baluster, especially with your toggle bolt method that deforms the pipe to the point of pulling through the drill holes, that is, if the tiny threads on the tiny bolt don't strip first. I suggest some type of more universal top angle or hinge/flex top to the balusters with a groove to receive a band clamp that wraps fully around the pipe and baluster top, and really pulls the whole connection together without the drilling, which was a major pain to do while trying to keep the rail in the right position. Think about it!read more

The designer was very helpful and very professional. The construction process was quick and delivery was ok. The stairs were somewhat easily installed. There were a few issues, the platform was missing two drilled holes for installation. The instructions showed the drilled... holes but there were none on our metal piece. The instructions were confusing at times, especially when there were many extra bolts which were not labeled (and a few missing bolts - maybe our package came with the wrong bags of hardware). We were able to install the stairs after going to the hardware store for the missing bolts. The railing was also difficult to install, the instructions are not very clear. Overall, we were able to install the stairs in two days with three people. We are very happy with the end product, there was a small amount of swearing during installation but it was manageable.read more

When I first heard Paragon's quote for our circular stairs, I was incredulous. It was less than 20% of what was quoted by a local steel fabricator.So I drove to Collegeville, PA from upstate NY to see for myself.Scott Lisle took me into the factory. I couldn't believe it.... Paragon makes all kinds of stairs. Top quality. They have 150 employees and turn out 6,000 sets of stairs a year!We filled out an order. After installing the treads I had to reposition them as a result of my wife giving the wrong height measurement to paragon and as a result the exit angle was different than expected (not Paragon program). Easy from beginning to end. Delivery was wonderful called in a compliment for driver. Laying it out was easy and installing took time but wasn’t to hard. My husband is 65, I am 68 and we did it! The only thing I Wish was more detailed was the instructions. Confusing at times.

Now that they are assembled they are very sturdy spiral stairs (economy DIY stair kit, no options). It took two people two days to install it. Their website says it takes two people but their instructions have one step that says you will need 3 or 4 people to accomplish. We... did it all with two people and some advance planning for safety.Remember that the economy DIY spiral stair kit is a narrow width staircase. They have wider versions for more ease of stepping up and down.NOTES:1) The center post came in 4 sections that screw together. Instructions seem to say to put the stair treads onto an assembled post after it is standing up in location (15 feet tall). That is not safe or easy.We put one post section (45" tall) on the floor and put the stair treads over that, then screwed the second post onto that and put the rest of the treads on. Then we screwed the remaining two sections on top of that.2) You don't need to hold the top platform in place while attaching to structure if you install ledger boards first that the platform can rest on and be level with floor. No effort to hold in place while fastening to structure, much safer.3) The top post is way taller than needed, about 3 feet above railing. I had to cut the top post section shorter to look better. Not easy to cut, it is heavy gauge steel tube.4) The main baluster on the first step needs to cut. They say to cut 1 1/2" off. I had to cut 2 1/2" off in order to make the railing height match all the other stair tread baluster heights. Measure your other baluster heights and calculate how much to cut off, not necessarily 1 1/2".5) The PVC railing instructions are too vague. You should use the hole in the baluster as a pilot hole to drill a 5/32 dia hole into the PVC railing then move the railing to the side and drill a larger hole in the PVC to accept the expanding wing nut.6) They say to drill a 3/8 diameter hole in the PVC railing for the wing nut. I found a 1/2" hole is much easier to slip the wing nut into.7) Put the wing nut screw through the baluster hole then thread the wing nut onto that. Collapse the wings and push into the hole in the PVC railing. The wings expand inside the tubing and can then be screwed down.8) I added foam pipe insulation to some the tread bottom edges to protect against head injuries when walking under the stairs.read more

The price was good. The customer support was good. Materials arrived on time and in full. I'm pleased with the final product, which I installed myself with the help of my son and a friend, but mostly myself.The are one improvement I would suggest is that they provide a site... with helpful hints that would greatly enhance the ease of installation. I discovered numerous techniques that i'm sure others already knew or learned along the way. I could have cut installation time significantly if I had been aware of these going in. For example, I was installing the standard galvanized steel treads, which need to be spaced according to the overall height of the staircase. I realized several treads short of the bottom that rather than carefully measuring and then trying to hold the tread in place and level while tightening the set screws that I should have cut an appropriate-size PVC pipe in half at the correct height. I could then position that on the center pole and slide the next tread in place knowing that it would be at the precise spacing.read more

I had the idea that a spiral staircase was what my house needed in order to give the 2nd level, which is actually only a half story, more floor space and head room and also to fix the problem of the only basement access being from the trap door in the floor of the pantry. Didn’t... have a clue as to whether or not this was actually possible but Paragon assured me that it was. All I did was call them up, email photos of the rooms, along with ceiling height measurements, and then they did all the design work and let me choose which materials I wanted. Went with the classic black spiral stairs and couldn’t be any happier with Paragon’s customer service and quality of product.The stairs arrived a week earlier than they estimated, the price was lower than what I expecting to pay, and the entire process was super easy, even for someone like me who doesn’t have a clue about envisioning remodel projects. They did it all for me and very quickly too!!If you’re in need of a staircase, I would highly recommend going with Paragon. My contractor had to call them up a couple times with questions and they were prompt to resolve the issues. Paragon did, however, manufacturer one part incorrectly—the top, center pole of the staircase wouldn’t fit into the bottom pole but Paragon suggested filing it down and if that didn’t work, then they would send out a replacement pole. Luckily, my contractor was able to file it down so that it would fit.Also, Paragon estimated the thickness of the floors when ordering the stairs and even though there turned out to be a 2nd ceiling above the lower ceiling, the stairs still fit after my contractor made some adjustments to the height of the stair risers. We went ahead and ordered an additional stair when this was found out and I’m still in the process of trying to cancel the order and get a refund. When I called yesterday, the person who I would need to speak to in order to cancel the order was already out of the office for the weekend, so now I have to wait till Monday to see if I can get the refund.read more

The delivery to Arizona was screwy as they went through several carriers and the staircase was separated from the pole and was not on the delivery truck.... But a week later it was all delivered. The outdoor galvanized staircase seems well built and was fairly easy to assemble with two sets of hands. Assembly instructions were good. Steve was super helpful in determining the correct size and walking us through the process via a shared screen to demonstrate placement and direction. I ordered these stairs because they were "in stock". A week... after the estimated ship date, they were just coming back from the galvanizing process. The instructions are lacking some basics, i.e. diameter of the concrete footer for the center pole (it's 16" in diameter, below frost line in your area), we had an extra critical part that was not on the instructions and two screws that ran into each other when we were installing the platform. We also really should have had another small footer for the post at the base of the stairs, but realized it too late to add one and again, it was not addressed in the instructions. I had to call customer support twice to get these details. Reps were very knowledgable and helpful, but this info should have been in the instructions which would have saved us time and two calls. Paragon should also have an instructional video on YouTube. We used a generic video to help our installers. Two experienced contractors spent 8 hours putting together our 60" exterior staircase with 11 steps. One point off for poor instructions and delay in shipping when I was told it was in stock.read more

I read Paragon's reviews, and decided to go with them. I didn't want to spend 5K and have a welded one craned over our house to our back deck. So I called Paragon and worked with Kevin to build a staircase custom made to our specifications for under 2K. It was easy and... clear to work with him. The stairs were shipped on time, and easy to unpack out of the 4'x4" pallet. My husband and I are 65 and did it all easily. All the items were listed and checked, and all there. We spray-painted them with double coats piece by piece before installation and saved ourselves $1K! Overall my experience with Paragon stairs is positive. The quality is great and it looks great installed. The rest of this review is a warning. To the prospective home owners looking to install these stairs yourselves, a few words of advice. Be persistent in asking for correct... foundation specifications for your new stairs. I was given multiple answers none of which were correct. I only discovered this of the day the stairs arrived unfortunately and couldn't fix my foundation accordingly to accommodate. Ignore the instructions for installing the stair tread on the column and then lifting into place if you buy the steel stairs. This will be an impossible task due to weight, and instead I advise dropping each stair tread on to the column from above with the column erect. I must also warn you, prospective buyer, that unlike other stair companies in this business, the stair treads do not have built in spacers between them so you are expected to measure and place them one at a time. This is extremely tedious and unnecessary. If only they had engineered the spacer into the tread. I suggest you build your own spacers to greatly decrease the difficulty of placing the treads at equal distances apart. I also suggest watching a couple YouTube videos (from other vendors as Paragon offers none) on how to pull apart the coiled handrail as it is not delivered at the correct diameter and it is not clear from the instructions how to perform this task and the process is easily misperformed. Finally, the instructions say an average buyer installs the stairs in 8 hrs. In my personal experience as a better than average handyman, this took closer to 14 hrs with 3 people. I would suggest Paragon Stairs to a friend for excellent build quality and fair price, but do your homework. Don't expect the instructions to be sufficient and allow more time than specified to complete your build.read more

Friendly staff. Helpful and caring. Main reason for four stars is certain parts should have had pre-drilled holes and weren't. The parts are well made with thick plate steel. I had to drill numerous holes which was not fun. Also, the platform has a poor design if mounted in a... corner. There is a support plate welded close to the holes for the lag screws. You cannot get a drill in there to drill your pilot holes. You therefore have to mark the holes, remove the platform, drill the pilot holes, and then put platform back. I ordered the diy to code economy stair kit and am overall happy with the final product. The only issue I had was when I called the sales team prior to ordering to verify that the primed option also included the handrail and center post and that they weren't just bare metal,... which the sales person said they would come with the black powder coat as well. They didn't, they are bare metal/aluminum and the center post has numerous gouges in it. I understand why they can't coat them now as it would be damaged during assembly however I would have liked to know that instead of feeling as though I was intentionally lied to, and also would have liked to have been told what their recommendation for painting these parts once assembled would be. Other than that bit of frustration, it came with plenty of extra hardware, all the parts, and the final assembled product is beautiful in our log cabin.read more

I could drill a few of them, but for the large ones in large metal pieces I had to pay a machine shop to do... it. Also, would be nice if platform and wood sanding, stain and poly coats could be done by the company. They worry about damage during shipping, but seems like that could be managed. If not, at least they could warn the customer they will be receiving all unsanded, unfinished wood pieces and they will need to be drilling holes in solid steel. I picked this company from two prospects. Main reason was that they provided realtime consultation during discussion. I'm partway into installation and find some issues. some balusters were formed incorrectly at their facility and new ones are on the way. However, all steps are... gouged on the outside face due to their (in my opinion) their equipment or clamping process along with sharp edges that could cause personal injury. I reported this to customer service and asked how and what is their remedy? No reply in regards to this issue after three weeks, somewhat depressing. With me, I'm a retired contractor and the solution is simple, however, to pay what I did, I did not expect these defects. The quality of the galvanized steel stairs is good. The instructions were wet by the time we got to the box. It would have been a good idea to enclose the assembly instructions in a plastic bag. Also, a few pieces of hardware were not long enough and required a trip to the... hardware store. Some of the screws require a square drive head. (Couldn't they have included this $1.34 item with the hardware?). The top platform railing had to be modified to make it fit due to the shape of our deck railing opening. Lastly, the center baluster tubes all have to be individually cut which would take forever with a hack saw. A steel cutting power saw is a necessity. On the positive side, the entire design seems well engineered and durable.read more

The product is great! The staircase is solid--I was worried that it might not be super sturdy, but it turned out very strong. Assembly was about as described--there is one point that you need a few people (4 is ideal, 3 is doable) to hold it up, plumb, and mount it, and another... time that 2 people are needed to get the handrail on, but most of the rest can be done with one person. If you get the wood tread covers, plan on this being a week-long installation. You can get some of it assembled, but you'll have to wait as you stain and polyurethane the wood before putting on balusters and the railing. The parts were clearly labeled & easy to identify. A couple of suggestions with the steel balusters: 1. Use a grinding tool to cut these to size--it was the easiest method I found. 2. If you have a 3-per-tread baluster setup like I did, install the longest first on every step and work your way to the shortest. That way if you cut one of the longer ones too short, you can use it for one of the shorter ones & won't end up having to order a replacement baluster. I'd suggest going to the hardware store to get different wood screws (phillips or star) if you're working with wood tread covers or a wood handrail. The square head ones provided are pretty easy to strip & frustrating to have to keep redoing. From a customer service point of view, Paragon did well. It takes a couple of months to produce these, but they were up front about that so expectations were clear. When I got the stairs, one piece didn't quite match up, but they were quick to replace it at minimal additional cost.read more

My husband and friend were able to install our spiral stairs with no problems. We were missing an end cap for the railing as the one sent did not fit. Company shipped us a new one promptly. The stairs look wonderful. The wood treads stained beautifully. My only negative... comment is related to the age old problem company's have where the left hand is not talking to the right hand (salesman, production, shipping, customer support). Our shipment arrived with three newborn siamese kittens inside the container (2 alive, 1 dead) in addition was a dead rat. What a surprise!read more

Everything went very smoothly from start to finish, The sales experience with Joe was very pleasant and no pressure. He sold me just what I needed and gave me a great price also. Shipping from Pennsylvania to Arizona was reasonably quick. The stairway arrived undamaged and no... parts missing. It took 3 of us to assemble with no problems. Two could do it but a third makes it safer I believe. It took 2 days to complete only because my help had other commitments and it was 110 degrees that day. Only one thing I would do different and that was checking all the steps for threaded holes were the set screws go. One step was not threaded and I had to drill and tap them myself using a bolt to secure it to the center pole. Not a big problem. I love the stairway!read more

This was my first spiral staircase and Paragon made it pretty easy for me with a great design department that delivered what I needed when they said they would delivery it. The stair arrived on time and undamaged. Assembly was pretty easy with the only difficult part was... stretching the coiled railing to a helical shape. This stretching cause some of the black paint to flake off. That was easily fixed with a can of black satin Rustoleum. The stairs look great and were very sturdy. I fixed the basement of my house and needed to install a spiral stair but there was a problem, the space between the walls was too narrow. I called many places including Home Depot but no one was able to provide the kind of stair I was looking for. I also called people who... work in the same trade and came to see and measure the space where the the stair would be installed but they were also unable to make it because they claimed the space was to small. Finally I found this company "Paragon Stairs" and I call them. When I told them about the space they also claimed that the space was not proper for a regular spiral stair. However, there went the extra mile and asked me as many details about the space and asked me to send them pictures and videos and all measurements of the space, and so I did. I few minutes later after they had received all the measurments they called me told me that there was a solution, and that they were going to customized the spiral stair, and that it was going to fit perfect on the spaced. Then they send me the pictures of how the stair would look and fit. I agreed with their proposal and within 3 weeks they send me the stair and I install it very easily and it fits perfect on the space. The communication and support was perfect as well as the price, and quality. I give these people 5 stars. They really deserve it. I will recommend them to my friends for their stairs needs.read more

Spiral staircase is a joy. Worked very closely with the Salter representative to get the dimensions accurately measured and the proper direction of the spiral. Once the unit was received I was able to install all of it myself except for the top step off pad. I had someone... help lift it onto the post and then hold it place while I bolted it to the deck. We ordered our stairs from Paragon after getting estimates for custom wrought iron spiral stairs from several companies here in Tucson. We were able to save nearly ten thousand dollars by using Paragon. The staff were very helpful with ordering. Our stairs arrived well packaged... and with almost all of the needed parts. The company quickly shipped us the few pieces of hardware that were missing. We hired a handyman to put the stairs together for us. It took him and his helper about a day to set them up and attach them to the house. They said set-up was straightforward. The only downside we've found with these stairs is that the corners and edges are a bit sharp, and several people had bumped their heads. We solved this problem by purchasing some pre-split pipe wrap at the nearest big box hardware store. It was really inexpensive and cushions the corners and under each stair beautifully.read more

We added a two car garage onto our home with an attic type room over the garage. We originally had access to that room with a pull down ladder; we replaced it with a set of spiral stairs from Paragon. Needless to say my skeptical wife is now very pleased and friends and family... are very complimentary! We raised the roof on our summer home, adding a couple of bedrooms and a much needed bathroom. We also opened up a loft for overflow guests but were not sure how to access the loft with space being issue. Would highly recommend this is a solid staircase. It was a fun project setting it all up, went very smooth. The directions where clear, with 2 people and a day had it installed. What a great company and what a great product! You can't beat the price for this quality of a product. It takes some skill and time putting together. I wish there was an assembly video as I had to do some guesswork. I made it work and am very happy with it. If you have pets... going up and down the stairs I would suggest putting some non-slip tread tape down on each step, my dog almost fell off the side!read more

Excellent kit. Recommend: Shorten landing railing by 3/4" to allow sheet rock-over-framing to clear the metal. Otherwise require the landing to be spaced at least 3/4" out away from the potential wall.

We had a VERY tight shaft with which to get a spiral staircase in and Paragon was the right solution. The only drawback I see to the staircase is the railing which I wish was of better material for the money we paid.

Stairs are great for a small space which is what i was looking for. Improvement would be better installation instructions. My contractors are very experienced people and had trouble figuring out how to install correctly. Maybe an online video of installation would help. But the... stairs are great. I was scared to order a set of steps from a online seller. I called to get a quote and was pleasantly surprised how responsive they were to my questions. I sent my plans to Jeff and he set me up with the steps we needed. We ordered our steps before construction on our house... started. During construction our contractor decided to make some changes to our plans and our steps were now wrong. I was freaking out and I called Jeff and he was able to send me an updated layout that just required us to turn the steps 90 degrees. We love our steps. I couldn't believe how heavy duty they are. I ordered a primed staircase to replace a decrepit wooden staircase to open up the patio beneath our deck. Their customer service is excellent. Brian even took time out of his day to set up a GoTo Meeting webinar and explain the different options and how it would be... installed.The staircase came in a large box on a pallet and the one-piece steel pole. I painted the staircase white and assembled it mostly on my own. However, it did require the assistance of two other guys to lift the pole, treads, and platform into position. If you plan to paint the exterior staircase, I would caulk each tread around the pole. I did not do this at first and it wasn't long before unsightly rust ruined the beautiful paint job on the pole. Overall, it was a great purchase and a fairly straightforward install.read more

Paragon was easy to work with, they provided up from information, clarification and great follow up on my questions. It turned out as Paragon described. I had my 2 sons help load the treads on the pole then I assembled it by my self over 3 partial days. I made a plywood height... template to simplify the assembly process. This sped up the assembly for me. I am over 60 years old, so If I can do it you can do it.read more

Good guide from start to feed back.Very nice service. Stair is very good and strong.I put stair from basement to 1st floor.After I put, air circulation is active and I enjoy basement. It's not storage anymore.I strongly recommend to install it.One thing to advice is put... label sticker to bottom of pole.It's very sticky and hard to remove, still some sticky thing left to pole. read more

WE purchased four sets of spiral stairs for our treehouses at a Girl Scout Camp. They are perfect. It took 2-3 men about a half a day to assemble one set. It takes detailed oriented folks to do so but it is not too difficult.I would suggest getting the diamond pattern... tread for the stairs if you have the time to wait for them. We added slip strips on the stairs to be on the safe side. Our stairs are on the center of the treehouses so will not get direct weather. We built wooden walls around the top of the stairway hole for safety. I would highly recommend these stairs and this company. They were a please with whom to work.read more
